Who is somnio suitable for?

In this article, you will learn who somnio is suitable for, when the app can be meaningfully used, and in which cases it is not recommended.

somnio is intended for adults with persistent sleep disorders (insomnia). This includes difficulties falling asleep and/or staying asleep, early morning awakening, as well as insufficient sleep duration or sleep quality over a longer period. The diagnosis of insomnia is made by a health care professional or psychotherapist.

The goal of somnio is to reduce typical symptoms of insomnia and to stabilize sleep in the long term. The app digitally implements the content of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and makes this guideline-based treatment easily accessible.

Sleep disorders can have different causes. In some cases, physical or medical reasons are present, for example an overactive thyroid. Such causes should be medically clarified and treated accordingly. somnio is intended for people in whom no organic sleep disorder requiring treatment is the primary cause of insomnia.

Many people with insomnia also have additional health or psychological conditions, for example chronic pain, depressive state, or anxiety disorders. Whether somnio is suitable in these cases is at the discretion of the treating health care professional or psychotherapist.

CBT-I can also be helpful in the presence of comorbid conditions. If you have additional conditions, we recommend consulting your treating specialist regularly during the sleep training to coordinate the approach.

For certain comorbid conditions, we have described the use of somnio in more detail in separate articles. There you will find further information on classification and possible use of somnio:

  • "somnio and Depression"
  • "somnio and Chronic Pain"
  • "somnio and Bipolar Affective Disorder or Epilepsy"
  • "somnio and the Co-Occurrence of Sleep Apnea and Insomnia (COMISA)"

Important:
The use of somnio is not suitable for people in acute mental health crises, especially where there are existing suicidal thoughts or intentions. In this case, please seek professional help immediately. You are not alone! In our articles “Are you experiencing symptoms beyond sleep problems?” and “Who can you contact in an emergency?” you will find important information and points of contact for support.
