What is a passkey?

In this article, you will learn what a passkey is, why it is used in somnio, and how to set it up.

A passkey is a modern and particularly secure way to log in to somnio – completely without a password. Instead of remembering a password, you use something that only you have access to, for example your fingerprint, your face (Face ID), or your device PIN. The passkey works like a digital key and ensures that only you have access to your user account.

Why is it necessary to set up a passkey in somnio?
somnio processes sensitive health data. To protect this data as effectively as possible, special security requirements apply to digital health apps (DiGAs), including requirements from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). Passkeys meet these requirements and offer a very high level of security.

For this reason, login with passkey will become mandatory in somnio in the future. Without a configured passkey, it will no longer be possible to log in to your user account in the future. To ensure smooth access, we therefore recommend setting up the passkey in good time.

Why are passkeys secure?
Passkeys are significantly more secure than conventional passwords. Biometric data such as your fingerprint or your face cannot be guessed or easily passed on. Your device PIN is also one of these secure login methods.

Your passkey is stored directly on your device and not on a central server. This means the risk of misuse is particularly low. In addition, the passkey makes it easier for you to log in, because you no longer have to remember a password and can log in quickly and conveniently.

How do you set up a passkey in somnio?
If you are registering with somnio for the first time, you can set up the passkey when registering. You will be guided through the process step by step.

If you already have a somnio account, you can also add the passkey later. To do this, open the somnio app or the browser version of somnio, log in with your access data, go to the "Login with passkey" section in your profile, and select "Set up passkey". Then follow the instructions on your device. These may vary slightly depending on the operating system.

Use a passkey on different devices?
You can also use a passkey on multiple devices, for example on your smartphone and tablet. For this, it is recommended to use a password manager that securely stores passkeys and makes them available across devices.
